Topic:

Jamming in Wireless Sensor Networks: Some Research Perspectives
_______________________________________________________________

Abstract:
Jamming is an important class of attacks that can severely affect the
successful functioning of any wireless network. The consequence of jamming
in sensor networks is particularly serious due to their resource
constraints and challenged environments of operation. The
Fundamental reason for such vulnerability to attacks is the open and
shared nature of communication medium of wireless networks. Depending on
the attacker¹s objective, the attack is termed as jamming or misbehavior.
If the attacker directly manipulates the protocol parameters to obtain
performance benefits for itself, the attack is termed as misbehavior. The
attack is referred to as jamming, if the attacker exploits protocol
semantics by disrupting network communication intentionally. Sensor
networks are subject to four kinds of jamming attacks constant, random,
deceptive, and reactive jamming. Detection of jamming and its
discrimination from other types of radio-link deteriorations, especially
as applicable to wireless sensor networks, is a challenging problem; and
as such, only few solutions exist.
The speaker will talk about the problem of jamming in wireless sensor
networks, with focus on military applications. He will then specifically
talk about some of his works done with his colleagues and students in
regard to jamming attack detection and jammed area mapping in wireless
sensor networks.
