TOPIC: eResearch ­ Management of Research Data

This talk will be held in English or German, according to preference



ABSTRACT:
Intelligent management of data is a current topic in many areas. This
especially applies to sciences which increasingly evolved from
experimental and simulation-based to data-driven research. This is not
only true for the natural sciences but also for life sciences, social
sciences and humanities. A common question is the efficient management of
large-volume of data as well as the analytics associated with it. ³Cloud
Computing² and ³Big Data Analytics² are current topics in computer science
to facilitate this kind of research. This includes the support of the
typical lifecycle ranging from capturing data to analytics, archiving and
re-use. The talk shows examples from the Goettingen Research Campus how
different disciplines are supported in this endeavor and how research data
management is established as a strategic institutional objective as part
of the campus research infrastructure.




BIO:
Ramin Yahyapour is full professor at the Georg-August University of
Göttingen since 2011. He is managing director of the GWDG, a joint compute
and IT competence center of the university and the Max Planck Society. The
GWDG has over 110 staff members and serves as a research and service
center. Prof. Yahyapour is also CIO of the University and the University
Medical Center Göttingen (UMG). Before his appointment in Göttingen, he
was Professor at TU Dortmund University, director of the IT & Media Center
and CIO of the University.

Dr. Yahyapour holds a doctoral degree in Electrical Engineering and his
research interest lies in the area of efficient resource management in its
application to service-oriented infrastructures, clouds, and data
management. He is especially interested in data and computing services for
eScience. He gives lectures on parallel processing systems, service
computing, distributed systems, cloud computing, Grid technologies. He was
and is active in several national and international research projects.
Since 2012 he is member of the IT commission of the German science
foundation (DFG) and speaker of the network commission. He is member of
the BAR of the Max Planck Society.

Liebe Mitglieder,

beim HIForum-Stammtisch am 19. November gibt es Gelegenheit, die neue Braukultur in den Schanzenhöfen zu erleben. Drei weitere Informatik Kolloquien noch in diesem Jahr bieten eher geistige Nahrung. Der Universitätsball steht unmittelbar bevor, bei entsprechender Teilnahme organisieren wir einen InformatikerInnentisch auf dem Ball. Und am letzten Tag des Novembers lädt uns die RoboCup AG anlässlich des "RoboCup Hamburg Open Workshop", kurz RoHOW, in die TU Hamburg-Harburg ein.

4. RoboCup Hamburg Open Workshop (RoHOW)


Die RoboCup AG lädt speziell alle Alumni des Fachbereichs Informatik am Sonntag, 30.11.2014 ab 10 Uhr in die Technische Universität Hamburg-Harburg ein:

Die Robocup AG veranstaltet in Kooperation mit der TUHH einen internationalen Workshop zu einem Thema, das viele nur mit Science-Fiction verbinden: Das Programmieren von Robotern, den RoHOW.
Dieser Workshop wird vom Universitätskolleg der Universität unter dem Titel "StIF - Studentische Initiativen Fördern" unterstützt

Der RoboCup Hamburg Open Workshop (RoHOW) ist eine Weiterbildungs- und Vernetzungsveranstaltung von Hamburger Studierenden der Universität Hamburg und der Technischen Universität Hamburg-Harburg (TUHH) mit Studierenden und Wissenschaftler/innen aus aller Welt, die auf dem Gebiet der Forschung an humanoiden Robotern tätig sind. Die Organisatoren/innen sind Studierende aus der RoboCup AG der Universität Hamburg und der RobotING@TUHH AG der TUHH.
Der RoHOW ist eine Wochenendveranstaltung vom 28.11 - 30.11.2014.

Jeder ist eingeladen, am Sonntag den 30.11.2014 Roboter aus aller Welt beim Fußballspielen anzufeuern und zu sehen, wie weltweit im Bereich der Robotik geforscht wird:

TOPIC: How scratching my own itch led to the best work of my Ph.D., and
other stories
--------------------------------------------------------------


This talk will be held in English.



ABSTRACT:
As I write this, it has been 10 years since I started doing research in
software engineering. In this talk, I relate three episodes of my research
career, and reflect on the lessons I learnt from them. The lessons
include (but are not limited to) the value of solving one¹s own problems,
the richness of unforeseen collaborations with neighboring research areas,
and the mindset necessary to approach problems in a way that made these
episodes possible in the first place. The stories feature suspense, drama,
and empirical software engineering.




BIO:
Romain Robbes is an Assistant Professor at the University of Chile
(Computer Science Department), in the PLEIAD research lab, since
January 2010. He earned his PhD in 2008 from the University of Lugano,
Switzerland and received his Master¹s degree from the University of
Caen, France. His research interests lie in Empirical Software Engineering
and Mining Software Repositories. He authored more than 50
papers on these topics at top software engineering venues (ICSE, FSE, ASE,
EMSE, ECOOP, OOPSLA), received best paper awards at WCRE 2009 and
MSR 2011, and was the recipient of a Microsoft SEIF award 2011. He has
served in the organizing and program committees of many software
engineering conferences (ICSE, MSR, WCRE, ICMSE, IWPSE, ECOOP, and others).

[HIForum] friendly Reminder: Antrittsvorlesung Prof. Dr. Frank Steinicke, 27.10.2014, 17:15

Liebe Aktive und Ehemalige des Fachbereichs, liebe HIForum-Mitglieder,

am kommenden Montag, 27.10.2014 ab 17:15 im Zuse-Hörsaal, Raum B-201
wird Prof. Dr. Frank Steinicke seine Antrittsvorlesung halten.

Prof. Dr. Frank Steinicke ist seit dem Sommersemester im Fachbereich für das Thema Mensch-Computer-Interaktion zuständig. Er füllt damit die Lücke, die sich nach der Pensionierung von Prof. Dr. Horst Oberquelle aufgetan hat.
Diese Professur ist von ganz besonderer Relevanz, da der Fachbereich außer dem Arbeitsbereich auch seit 2009 einen Bachelorstudiengang Mensch-Computer-Interaktion anbietet.

Wir freuen uns sehr, Sie zu dieser Antrittsvorlesung mit dem Titel
Fooling your Senses for (Super-)Natural User Interfaces

Herr Steinicke wird uns wahrscheinlich auch eine Visualisierung der geplanten neuen Gebäude der Informatik auf dem ebenfalls geplanten MIN-Campus beidseits der Bundesstr. zeigen. Ganz viele Alumni haben bereits in Stellingen auf dem Informatik-Campus studiert. Es soll jedoch auch Alumni aus der Zeit davor, als der Fachbereich noch zwischen Rothenbaumchaussee, Schlüterstr., Troplowitzstr. und Bodenstedtstr. verteilt war (verteilte Arbeitsbereiche). Für alle ist es sicherlich spannend zu sehen, wohin die Reise nun, nach 25 Jahren Stellingen (die sich bis zum Umzug um weitere 7 Jahre verlängern werden) geht.

Also ein spannender Vortrag, auf den wir uns freuen können!

TOPIC: Fooling your Senses for (Super-)Natural User Interfaces

This talk will be held in English or German, according to preference.

ABSTRACT:
In his essay "The Ultimate Display" from 1965, Ivan E. Sutherland states
that "The ultimate display would [...] be a room within which the computer
can control the existence of matter [...]". This general notion of a
computer-mediated or virtual reality, in which synthetic objects or the
entire virtual environment get indistinguishable from the real world,
dates back to Plato's "The Allegory of the Cave" and has been reconsidered
again and again in science fiction literature as well as the movie
industry.

For instance, virtual reality is often used to question whether we truly
"know" if our perceptions are real or not. Movies like "The Matrix" or the
fictional holodeck from the Star Trek universe are prominent examples of
these kind of perceptual ambiguities. Furthermore, in movies like Steven
Spielberg's "Minority Report" or Jon Favreau's "Iron Man 2″ actors can
seamlessly use free-hand gestures in space combined with speech to
manipulate 3D holographic projections, while they also perceive haptic
feedback when touching the virtual objects. In my talk I will revisit some
of the most visually impressive 3D user interfaces and experiences of such
fictional ultimate displays. As a matter of fact, we cannot let a computer
fully control the existence of matter, but we can fool our senses and give
a user the illusion that the computer can after all. I will show how
different ultimate displays can be implemented with current
state-of-the-art technology by exploiting perceptually-inspired
interfaces. However, we will see that the resulting ultimate displays are
not so ultimate at all, but pose novel interesting future research
challenges and questions.

BIO:
Frank Steinicke is professor for Human-Computer Interaction at the
Department of Informatics at the University of Hamburg. From 2011 to 2014
he was professor for Computer Science in Media at the Department of
Computer Science at the University of Würzburg and chair of the Immersive
Media Group. Between 2012 and 2014 he was the director of the newly
founded interdisciplinary Institute for Human Computer Media. In 2009 he
assumed an associate guest professor position at the University of
Minnesota. He studied Mathematics with a Minor in Computer Science at the
University of Münster, from which he received his PhD and Venia Legendi in
Computer Science.

His research is driven by understanding the human perceptual, cognitive
and motor skills and limitations in order to reform the interaction as
well as the experience in computer-mediated realities. Frank Steinicke
regularly serves as panelist and speaker at major events in the area of
virtual reality and human-computer interaction. The results of his work
have been published and presented in several international conferences and
journals including CHI, SIGGRAPH, VR, ACM TOG, IEEE TVCG, and many others.
Furthermore, he is on the IPC of various national and international
conferences and currently co-chair of ACM SUI 2014 and IEEE 3DUI 2014.
Furthermore, he is a member of the Steering committee of the ACM SUI
Symposium and the GI SIG VR/AR.
