Finding one's way in large public buildings like airport, hospitals or university building can be a challenging experience for most of us. Inspired by human-computer interaction and usability approaches two research projects in the SFB/TR8 Spatial Cognition try to identify, which characteristics of wayfinding tasks and which architectural properties of buildings trigger wayfinding difficulties. My presentation aims to give an overview of both our studies with building users and architectural designers. The architectural theory of space syntax provides a key approach for identifying and quantifying problematic "hotspots" in the building, especially for complex multi-level settings. Our studies with architects investigate how design practitioners address issues of orientation and wayfinding and why they often overlook user requirements and capabilities. Interviews with architectural designers yield a rich combination of verbal comments, drawing and pointing gestures and pose their own methodological challenges for analyzing such multi-modal data sets.
