Abstract:

With the increase of interconnectivity and ubiquitous data access, new services have emerged. Distributed Ledger Technologies and their underlying principles can be used to reach agreement or consensus upon a distributed state in a highly distributed environment. They have many different aspects and can therefore be viewed from various angles, including the financial and economic, legal, political, and sociological perspective, as well as considering technical and socio-technical points of view. In the presentation I will show three aspects that are important in our research: (1) theoretical foundations, (2) understanding real world phenomena, and (3) impact. For instance, proof-of-work (PoW) as used in Bitcoin is not only relevant to achieving consensus but also serves as a source of randomness. Without it leader selection becomes an issue. Finally, understanding economic incentives and malicious behavior to undermine consensus in public blockchains is important to create a stable cryptocurrency environment upon which new services can be built.

Abstract:

In the last years, peer production systems (e.g., Wikipedia, Wikidata) have emerged that involve a large number of people in problem-solving processes. Although the role of humans in such processes is essential, we want to show to what extent human and machine intelligence are combined to realize the complex tasks in these peer production systems. Previous research has investigated the process of vandalism control in Wikipedia or the translation of social norms into algorithmic mechanisms defined by software functions and bots. From the discussion of these works, we infer the concept of human-machine collaboration and determine initial design parameters that allow us to transfer our findings to other application areas. We present, thus, the first results of our research on human-machine collaboration in the field of ideation. We introduce Interactive Concept Validation (ICV) as an approach that enables ideators to disambiguate terms used in their ideas. Furthermore, we show that our approach allows for a better understanding of the impact of creativity-enhancing interventions in the ideation process. We conclude this talk with an outlook on future research and reflect on the broader impact of our research.

Bio:

Claudia Müller-Birn is the head of the research group Human-Centered Computing (HCC.lab) at the Institute of Computer Science at the Freie Universität Berlin. Before her appointment at FU Berlin, she undertook a post-doc at the Carnegie Mellon University, based on a Feodor Lynen Research Fellowship of the Alexander von Humboldt-Foundation. Her interdisciplinary research advances the fields of Computer-Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW) and Social Computing. She is especially interested in investigating human-machine collaboration in which the collective intelligence of humans intertwines with machine intelligence. Her research entails both an empirical and an engineering dimension. The objective is, on the one hand, to advance our understanding of the functioning of complex socio-technical peer production systems that involve human-machine collaboration and on the other hand, to contribute to a value-based socio-technical systems design that fulfills the specific needs of an application area, such as in ideation, and visualization. Besides, Claudia advocates the use and development of open source software, the principles of open science in her research work, and the open access to scholarly knowledge.

Abstract:

In this talk I shall outline a summary of our five year long initiative studying the temporal dynamics of various human language-like entities over the social media. Some of the topics that I plan to cover are (a) how opinion conflicts could be effectively used for incivility detection in Twitter [CSCW 2018], (b) how word borrowings can be automatically identified from social signals [EMNLP 2017] and (c) how hashtags in Twitter form compounds like natural language words (e.g., #Wikipedia+#Blackout=#WikipediaBlackout) that become way more popular than the individual constituent hashtags [CSCW 2016, Honorable Mention].

Bio:

Animesh Mukherjee is an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur. He is also a Simons Associate, ICTP, Italy and an ACM Distinguished Speaker. His main research interests are in applying complex system approaches (mainly complex networks and agent-based simulations) to different problems in Computer Science including
(a) human language evolution and change,
(b) web social media,
(c) information retrieval, and
(d) natural language processing
He regularly publishes in top conferences like ACM SIGKDD, ACM CIKM, ACM CSCW, ICWSM, ACL, EMNLP, COLING, ACM/IEEE JCDL and journals like PNAS, Sci Reports, ACM TKDD, ACM CACM, IEEE TKDE, IEEE JSAC, Phys. Rev, Europhysics Letters. He regularly serves on the programme committee of various top conferences like IJCAI, EMNLP, COLING. He has received many notable awards including the INAE Young Engineer Award 2012, INSA Medal for Young Scientists 2014, IBM Faculty Award 2015 and the Humboldt Fellowship for Experienced Researchers in 2017.
