TOPIC: Security and privacy threat analysis: lessons learned and future directions

This talk will be held in English 



ABSTRACT:

Threat analysis is the cornerstone of security-by-design and privacy-by-design approaches for building more secure and privacy-friendly software systems. Threat analysis provides the means to assess a design model (e.g., a software architecture) and identify potential flaws early on in the software development life-cycle. This talk will overview a series of empirical studies that investigated the performance of state-of-the-practice threat analysis techniques. We will introduce the setup used for the empirical evaluation, present the observed results and discuss the limitations of the existing techniques. Moving forward, the talk will outline our present research directions in the field of threat analysis, with particular focus on a) improving the efficiency of said techniques and b) supporting automated analysis and refactoring.  


SPEAKER BIOGRAPHY:

Prof. Riccardo Scandariato received his PhD in Computer Science in 2004 from Politecnico di Torino, Italy. After several years at KU Leuven in Belgium, in 2014 he moved to Sweden and joined the department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Gothenburg.

Prof. Scandariato's main research interests are in the area of secure software engineering, with a particular focus on (i) privacy&security by design and (ii) empirical methods for security. He has published over 65 papers in the area of security and software engineering and regularly participates to the Program Committees of several top-rated conferences in the area of security and software engineering. He is also a passionate teacher and the coordinator of the Master programs in Software Engineering at the University of Gothenburg and the Chalmers University of Technology.

TOPIC: Security Monitoring - from intrusion detection to botnets -

ABSTRACT:

Attacks on IT systems increasingly threaten modern societies. As there
will be always successful attacks, it is important to have security
monitoring as a second line of defense in place. Only when attacks are
detected early on and countermeasures are enforced immediately, the
resulting damage can be minimized. Starting with an overview on my current
research on security monitoring, the talk will put a special emphasis on
the monitoring of P2P-based botnets. Each Botnet can easily comprise up to
millions of infected machines and they threaten the Internet ecosystem.
They are involved in many cyber-crime activities, such as the theft of
banking credentials or Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks.
Current botnets show a high level of self-organization and are highly
resilient against any takedown attempts. The talk will shine a light on
the botnet ecosystem and will present recent approaches to monitor them.



SPEAKER BIOGRAPHY:

Mathias Fischer is an assistant professor at the University Hamburg since
September 2016. Before that, he was an assistant professor at the
University Münster (2015-16), a Postdoc at the International Computer
Science Institute (ICSI)/ UC Berkeley (2014-15), and Postdoc at the Center
for Advanced Security Research Darmstadt (CASED) / TU Darmstadt from
(2012-14). His research interests encompass IT and network security,
resilient distributed systems, network monitoring, and botnets. Mathias
received a PhD in 2012 and a diploma in computer science in 2008, both
from TU Ilmenau.

ABSTRACT:

Semantic technology, once a niche academic endeavour, has evolved to the point of becoming an important asset for big organizations and enterprises. Yet, it remains unclear how to relate existing knowledge graphs to the vast amounts of text and structured data available online. In this talk, I will argue that this challenge calls for a move towards more cognitive approaches, including 1) better knowledge integration methods, 2) an increased reliance on linguistic knowledge, and 3) neural modeling. The talk will showcase several of our contributions towards this goal. These include our work on large multilingual knowledge graphs such as the Universal Wordnet, on integrated semantic resources such as FrameBase, and on large-scale common-sense resources such as WebChild.



SPEAKER BIOGRAPHY:

Gerard de Melo is joining Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science. He previously served as an Assistant Professor at Tsinghua University, Beijing, heading the Web Mining and Language Technology group. Over the years, he has published over 70 research papers, with Best Paper awards at CIKM 2010, ICGL 2008, and the NAACL 2015 Workshop on Vector Space Modeling, as well as an ACL 2014 Best Paper Honorable Mention, a Best Student Paper Award nomination at ESWC 2015, and the WWW 2011 Best Demonstration Award, among others. Prior to joining Tsinghua, de Melo had spent two years as a Visiting Scholar at UC Berkeley, working in the ICSI AI group. He received his doctoral degree at the Max Planck Institute for Informatics. [HIForum] Einladung ins Computer-Museum

Liebe Mitglieder des Hamburger Informatik-Forums!

Einen herzlichen Gruß aus dem Computer-Museum verbunden mit einer Einladung und einer Spendensuche.

Das Computer-Museum hat sich zu einem spannenden Ort entwickelt, nicht zuletzt durch kleine Sachspenden von HIForum-Mitgliedern.
Von den Anfängen des Rechnens mit mechanischen Rechenhilfen und des Schreibens, Speicherns und Übertragens von Daten über eine reichhaltige Sammlung von Tisch- und Taschenrechnern, Telefonen, Homecomputern, ersten Computern mit graphischer Oberfläche und Maus, portable Computer bis zur ersten Kugel-Maus und ihren Nachkommen im Mouse-oleum lassen sich bahnbrechende Entwicklungen der Informatik verfolgen.

Einladung:
Als Zeitzeuge dieser rasanten Entwicklung möchte ich - speziell als Dank für die Unterstützung durch HIForum e.V. - allen Interessierten in einer Führung diese Schätze zeigen. Da der Platz beschränkt ist, können nur maximal 15 Personen an dieser Führung teilnehmen. Bei Bedarf lassen sich aber weitere Termine vereinbaren.

The amount of digital images in our daily live has grown exponentially
during the last years, cameras are low-cost sensors which are present
everywhere, and billions of images are daily shared on social media. Also
the industrial interest in methods for digital image and video processing
is increasing strongly. As a consequence, the need for algorithms that
automatically improve, analyze, and
interpret images also rises more and more. Fortunately, the research field
of computer vision has also advanced strongly during the last decade and
many things which were not feasible a few years ago are suddenly
achievable. However, when it comes to seemingly simple daily live
questions such as "how many objects are on this table?", current systems
reach their limits and it shows that the human visual system still
outperforms machines clearly.

In my research group, we focus on biologically inspired methods for
computer vision. That means, we develop algorithms that follow mechanisms
of human vision, outgoing from psychophysical and neurobiological
findings. Topics of our research include the detection of saliency in
images and the discovery of objects. We focus on methods for mobile

1. Berufsbilder in der Informatik

Im Zuge des kürzlich stattfindenden Schnupperstudiums (https://www.inf.uni-hamburg.de/studies/prospective-students/schnupperstudium.html) zum Start des neuen Semesters gab es unter anderem auch ein "Gespräch mit Berufstätigen". Die Vielfalt der Berufsbilder in der Informatik wurde dort durch Berichte zweier Berufstätiger näher gemacht.

Die rund 40 anwesenden Schüler nahmen die Chance wahr und hörten aufmerksam zu wie Dr. Guido Gryczan, Geschäftsführer der WPS Workplace Solutions GmbH (https://www.wps.de/), und unser zweiter Vorsitzenden, Dr. Christian Graf, selbstständig als Teilhaber der UXessible GbR (http://www.uxessible.com), aus ihrem doch sehr verschiedenen Alltag berichteten. Das stereotype Bild des einsam nur über seinem Rechner brütenden Nerds konnten beide aus ihrer Erfahrung korrigieren. Heute komme es vielmehr auf Zusammenarbeit und Kommunikation an. Außerdem gebe es viel mehr Ausrichtungen in der Informatik als dieses Bild es vermuten lasse (siehe dazu auch den Artikel "Gesucht wird, wer wand­lungs­fähig ist (https://www.mittelstandswiki.de/wissen/IT-Skills)"). Anschließend gab es eine Fragerunde.

Fazit als HIForum: wir hoffen auf viele interessierte Neustudierende in ein paar Jahren, die uns dann auch als Alumni bereichern werden.


2. EXPO 2016 - HIForum sponsort einen Preis

Mit insgesamt 17 Exponaten war die diesjährigen EXPO ein Magnet für die Besucher. 56 Schülerinnen und Schüler des Schnupperstudiums konnten so einen weiteren Einblick in das Informatik-Studium erhalten. Für die Jury war es nicht einfach, aus den vielen hervorragenden Arbeiten die 3 preiswürdigsten Arbeiten auszuwählen. Hier sind die Preisträger:

Besondere Erwähnung fand das Exponat Selbstfahrende Autos von Konstantin Kobs und Jakob Rick, das im Rahmen des Master-Praktikum „Vermittlung digitaler Themen als Beitrag zur digitalen Transformation" in des Arbeitsbereichs CSEd entstand.

Wir danken allen TeilnehmerInnen für die Ausstellung wirklich interessanter und hervorragender Arbeiten und gratulieren den Gewinnern.


3. Neue Arduino AG vom HIForum gefördert

Dieses Semester wird am Fachbereich Informatik die Arduino AG neu gegründet. Der Arduino ist ein Mikrocontroller auf einer Platine, den man über den Rechner via USB programmieren kann. Man kann damit eine automatische Steuerung für das Gießen der eigenen Balkonpflanzen bauen, ein Codeschloss mit PIN für den Kühlschrank, das einen jedes Mal per SMS benachrichtigt, wenn jemand es bedient, die Steuerung für einen Smart Mirror oder sogar einen 3-D-Drucker.

Ziel der AG ist es, interessierten Studierenden über die Arbeit am Arduino einen unkomplizierten Einstieg ins physikalische Programmieren zu ermöglichen und Fortgeschrittenen mit Material und Unterstützung beim Umsetzen eigener Projekte zur Seite zu stehen.

Um die Teilnahme nicht von der finanziellen Leistungsfähigkeit der einzelnen Studierenden abhängig zu machen, hat das HIForum eine Grundfinanzierung für die die Anschaffung von Arduinos, Sensoren, Steckbrettern, Motoren und anderen elektronischen Bauteilen zur Verfügung gestellt. Dies soll die Studenten auch ermutigen, selbst andere Finanzierungsquellen aufzutun, um weitergehende Anschaffungen selbst zu schultern. Die AG wird auf der nächsten Mitgliederversammlung über die Verwendung des Geldes und ihre Arbeit berichten.


4. Snowden am Informatikum?!

Der Vorstand des HIForum (http://hiforum.de/kontakt/index.html) unterstützt das Bestreben der Fachschaft, reflektiert und kritisch mit dem Thema Informatik und der dafür gebrauchten Technik umzugehen. Daher geben wir hier die Resolution der Fachschaft wieder, mit der der Fachschaftsrat aufgefordert wird, zeitnah einen Antrag an das Studierendenparlament zu entwickeln, der unserer Meinung nach diese Reflektion unterstützen würde:

"Vor wenigen Wochen ist der Film „Snowden" in die Kinos gekommen. Mithilfe dieses Films ist das Thema leicht verständlich und für jeden zugänglich. Die Fachschaft Informatik der Universität Hamburg möchte dies zum Anlass nehmen Bewusstsein für Massenüberwachung zu schaffen.

In den USA gab es bereits einige Events an Universitäten, wo Edward Snowden per Livestream zugeschaltet war und über die Thematik diskutiert wurde. In Deutschland und vor allem in Hamburg hat es so etwas bislang nicht gegeben. Die unmittelbare Kommunikation mit Edward Snowden sorgt jedoch bei den meisten Anwesenden für eine wirkliche Reflexion des eigenen Verhaltens. Ein einfacher Filmabend vermag dies in der Regel nicht, da dort lediglich konsumiert wird.

Vor diesem Hintergrund unterstützt die Fachschaft Informatik Bestrebungen einen Filmabend mit anschließendem Gespräch mit Edward Snowden zu organisieren und durchzuführen, um eine möglichst breite Öffentlichkeit zu erreichen."


5. Ankündigung: Antrittsvorlesung Professur Computer Vision

Am 14. November 2016 um 17 Uhr findet im Rahmen des Kolloquiums die Antrittsvorlesung von Prof. Dr. Simone Frintrop im Konrad-Zuse-Hörsaal (https://www.uni-hamburg.de/onTEAM/campus/index.html?loc=i1304496845) statt. Thema des Vortrags ist: "Cognitive Computer Vision for Mobile Systems".

Im Anschluss daran soll es einen kleinen Umtrunk in der Mensa geben. Anmeldung bis zum 30.10. per Email an Kerstin Diop (mailto:diop@informatik.uni-hamburg.de?subject=Anmeldung%20f%C3%BCr%20Kolloquium%20am%2014.%20November) schicken könnten, damit genügend Getränke und Snacks besorgt werden können.


6. Ankündigung: Uniball 2016

Am 19. November 2016 findet zum vierten Mal der Universitätsball im Grand Elysée (http://www.alumni-uhh.de/universitaetsball/ball.html) statt. Seit dem letzten Jahr mit Unterstützung von HITeC, das Hamburger Informatik-Technologie-Center e.V. Das Ganze geht recht früh los und die Orga empfiehlt allen, sich die Fashion Show nicht entgehen zu lassen (Südkorea hat diesmal die Schirmherrschaft über den Ball). Die Informatik ist übrigens auch auf dem Flyer (http://www.alumni-uhh.de/uploads/media/Uniball_2016_-_Flyer.pdf) gut vertreten.

Wir freuen uns, wenn wir viele Ehemalige und Aktive des Fachbereichs auf dem Ball treffen!

ABSTRACT:

The importance of architecture design decisions in software engineering has been highlighted over the past ten years, where a significant amount of research has been done. Several methods, models and tools have been proposed and the state of research reflects mature knowledge on the theory behind architecture design decisions. Still, the state of practice lags behind significantly, as industry is reluctant to adopt the proposed technologies mainly because of the involved cost. In this talk, we will focus on addressing this problem through pragmatic, evidence-based and tool-supported approaches to assist architects in making architecture design decisions within the complex realities of industry.




SPEAKER BIOGRAPHY:

Dr. Paris Avgeriou is Professor of Software Engineering in the Johann Bernoulli Institute for Mathematics and Computer Science, University of Groningen, the Netherlands where he has led the Software Engineering research group since September 2006. Before joining Groningen, he was a post-doctoral Fellow of the European Research Consortium for Informatics and Mathematics (ERCIM). He has participated in a number of national and European research projects directly related to the European industry of Software-intensive systems. He has co-organized several international conferences and workshops (mainly at the International Conference on Software Engineering - ICSE). He sits on the editorial board of IEEE Software and Springer Transactions on Pattern Languages of Programming (TPLOP). He has edited special issues in IEEE Software, Elsevier Journal of Systems and Software and Springer TPLOP. He has published more than 130 peer-reviewed articles in international journals, conference proceedings and books. His research interests lie in the area of software architecture, with strong emphasis on architecture modeling, knowledge, evolution, patterns and link to requirements. He champions the evidence-based paradigm in Software Engineering research.
